What is Biomimicry?
Biomimicry is defined as the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modelled on biological entities and processes. The idea behind biomimicry is that nature has already solved the challenges that we are trying to solve.
Biomimicry in Design
Many researchers, designers, engineers, architects, and more are studying how organisms and ecosystems work and applying that thinking to providing useful products and services. And as a result, nature-inspired designs are already being used with varied applications including packaging, adhesion systems, transportation, and energy production.
Principles of Biomimicry
In the book SustainAble (2008), the author lists some questions to ask when considering innovations inspired by nature:
First, will it fi t in?
Secondly, will it last?
And lastly is there a precedent for this nature?
According to the author, if these questions were solidly answered, then the concept, innovation or product design should be considered to fall under the principles of biomimicry.
